This year, Pete Tong celebrated 20 years at Radio 1. We met him at his London studio to look back on a life dedicated to dance music – and find out just what it is that keeps him coming back for more.

Pete Tong has had a recurring nightmare for 35 years. “It’s always the same,” he says, “I’m DJing, and the record I’m playing starts running out… and I can’t find another one to put on. I’m looking everywhere and I’m panicking and then just before it runs out I wake up like this.” At this point he clenches his fists and shudders convulsively, like a man running at top speed who’s just come to the end of his invisible rope.

We’re sitting in Pete Tong’s studio space in leafy Parsons Green in south-west London. Gold and platinum records line the walls, the trophies from the three strands of Pete’s career: radio presenter, record label A&R and club DJ. Above the decks is an original print by Goldie, who Pete describes as, “Like family –I think we were brothers in another life or something.” There’s memorabilia spread out everywhere today, as Pete’s been digging through his archives for Mixmag – ancient flyers from Soul Weekenders, pictures from Ibiza in 1988 or sitting at huge archaic mixing desks at forgotten radio stations, even the framed sleeve of the antique orchestral record that Pete found years ago in New York, and which gave the name to his famous FFRR

What makes a great DJ? There is no single answer to this question. At Dubspot, we want to help you figure out and achieve what great DJing means to you. The goal of our DJ program is to make that choice as well-informed as possible. The journey will be extremely rewarding. We can’t wait to take it with you! In the meantime, here are some tips from our talented instructors to get you started.

1. Thorough preparation is very valuable, especially with the constant barrage of new music DJs must face on a daily basis. I generally won’t play a track in a live set until I’ve: Beat Gridded it, Run it through Mixed In Key, Marked every key section of the song with Cue Points, Set strategic loops on cool parts and vocal phrases, Written appropriate notes in the comments field of my browser, and Organized it into all the appropriate playlists. This way even if a song is brand new, I can play it as if I’ve known it for years. - DJ Shiftee

2. If you are a warm up DJ don’t play banging stuff. Warm up the crowd properly. Nothing will get you not invited back worse than coming on to an empty room and playing every banging hit track. It won’t work and you will piss off the promoter and the people playing afterward. Feel it out and warm up to a peak. The party will go well and people will want to book you again. - Matt Shadetek

DJ Endo, Dubspot Instructor and Native Instrument DJ Product Specialist

3. Check out the latest evolution of DJ Technology with Traktor’s new Sample Decks. While it’s possible to drop your own loops and one shots into Traktor’s sample decks and play them in perfect sync with what your DJing, I find it most intriguing that you can actually create your OWN samples, grabbing the favorite parts of all of your tracks and building your own library of samples made out of tracks that you own. – DJ Endo

4. There are 2 kinds of DJ’s – Ones who take requests and ones who don’t. Be the latter. Also: Practice without headphones and you can master beat matching. - Raz Mesiani / Badawi

DJ Shiftee, in action!

5. If the DJ booth is visible to the crowd, you are performing whether you like it or not. Visibly acting like you are enjoying/engaged with what youare doing goes a long way. Energy is contagious. - DJ Shiftee

6. Always be prepared. Even if the spot claims to guarantee turntables, CDJs, controllers, slip mats, needles, and or built in interfaces… BRING YOUR OWN! You don’t want to be unpleasantly surprised at the venue. Also – always bring a line in cable. If everything is just plain wrong at the gig but you still have to play something… that line in will plug to your laptop, ipod or phone. That will be your gig saver. - Mike Rivera / OneMic

7. When blending tracks together, lower/cut the bass on one of the tracks to create room for the other track. If you cut the bass on the track you’re blending into, the vocals & other mid-range sounds will still be audible (but you’ll be hearing them with the old bass line!). if there’s vocals on the old track, consider lowering the mids to save sonic space for the new vocals. Alternately – if you cut the bass on the track you’re leaving, it creates a smoother transition to the new track because the heaviest elements of the old song will be gone drawing attention & emphasis to the new track. - Sean Clements

8. Develop a knowledge of tempo, especially if you play music within a wide range of genres. If you’re a digital DJ, make sure all your music is tagged with the accurate BPM. Even when you’re just doing recreational listening, make sure the BPM column in your iTunes (or other music library program) is visible, and make a mental note of the BPM of the song as you’re hearing it. You can go through each song and manually add the BPM, or use a program like Mixed in Key to analyze batches of music identifying BPM and key of songs (for harmonic mixing). If you’re using vinyl, use mailing labels or masking tape to make notes about BPM and breaks on the album sleeves of songs. - Martin Perna

9. Know your tunes. Develop your musical memory by playing tunes over and over, until you can sing them in your head. If you can hum the tune when you look at the album cover, it’s yours. - JP Solis

10. When you are performing live and find yourself confused in a mix – turn your headphones and monitor down to re-gain control of your ears (and the mix.) Your ears fatigue from high volume levels and you need to give them a break to perform well. Often when DJs feel “lost” in the mix it’s a matter of the headphones or monitor (or both) being too loud. Make a habit of turning down your headphones and monitor between mixes to give your ears a chance to bounce back and work properly. - Michael Walsh

Ross Lara is fast becoming one of the music industry’s most highly skilled and versatile producers. His craft is a unique mix of emotional song writing and highly intricate programming that creates productions designed to unleash the full range of emotional vibe. His production expertise has created opportunities for him to work with some of the industry’s most in-demand producers.

Ross has garnered several major label credits, including Warner Bros./Reprise Records for his remix work with Bill Hamel on Tegan and Sara’s hit single “Alligator,” Jason Derulo’s top 10 Billboard hit “In My Head,” and a lavish remix of E1 Entertainment/Koch Records Erika Jayne’s “Pretty Mess” which hit #1 on Billboard Dance Charts. He also teamed up with Hamel and legendary Drum n’ Bass DJ, AK1200, to create “Sanctuary,” an international dance radio hit that was subsequently licensed by Universal Music for the popular “Tap Tap Revenge” iPhone game and “World Rally Championship 2010.”

Ross Lara has his feet firmly planted in just about anything that involves music. His fingers drift spontaneously over piano keys creating beautiful melodies that can raise the hair on the back of your neck. Late at night you might find him in a nightclub DJing with reckless abandon and over-the-top energy or he might be playing hooks to his own songs with his favorite Nord Lead Synthesizer in concert. Ross has had the world’s most influential dance artists, including Armin Van Buuren and BT support his dance releases and has collaborated with Roger Shah on an epic trance number “Lay Down” featuring Todd Wright. With pride, precision and perfection, he produces songs for seasoned artists in almost any genre of music and does it all for the absolute love of the music.

Where did the name come from? My mother named me Edward Ross Lara 23 years ago! Haha

-What inspires you to create music? Inspiration comes from so many different outlets. First and foremost, making music is my biggest passion and joy in life. I am so fortunate to have discovered it nearly 12 years ago. It is influenced by dance parties, nature, relationships, and much much more.

-How long have you been producing music? Five years!

-What do you use to create your music? Software/Hardware? I have a hybrid studio… I work with several DAW’s, Logic Pro being my main engine. More plug in’s and stand alone sound design app’s then I know what to do with! I love my analog synths too. I use a Roland Juno 106 for bizarre, modulating pads and bass. A lot of my pads come from the Roland JP-8000. In one of my “Wentworth & Mordemere” singles, I have a vintage Korg A-15 synth from 79′, the bell tones on it are sick!

-What are some of your favorite clubs you have DJed at? The 930 Club and FUR in Washington DC. The Church in Denver and The Delencey Nightclub in New York.

-What was one of your favorite partys to DJ? I opened for Paul van Dyk for Buzzlife the night of my high school graduation. By far a highlight of my young DJ years. I have also toured under my alias SECTR 24 with my cousin Stephen and I look forward to touring again with friend Nik Sharp for the “Wentworth & Mordemere – Dust Off The Dance Floor Tour.”

-What is your favorite drink when you play at a club? Red Bull

-Where can we hear and purchase your music? I have my music and all other portals tied to my homepage: www.rosslara.com

-Any shout outs you want to give? Nik Sharp aka Mordemere. Jules, TC Motha F*cka, Dr. D, Devin Graham, and my parents.

-What is your favorite automobile? I would like to buy the new Tesla ride

-What is your favorite food? Sushi and cookies!-Give us a random fact about yourself.I wear miss matching socks on a regular basis.

-If you could have a super power, what would it be? To fly

-When is your next tour? March 2 – 18, 2011!

Where did the name come from? Our name was derived from a line in the first song we recorded together, “The collision of the Cosmic Snow.” The line reads, “Now it’s seventeen years and the day is dawn!”

What inspires you to create music? We simply enjoy making music. The inspiration for a “sound” can come from many places: usually just what we feel like doing with each song. We enjoy trying different sounds.

What do you use to create your music? We use Logic 9 and ProTools for recording, mixing and mastering.

What are some of your favorite venues you have perofrmed at? We haven’t played many shows but our most memorable is playing live at Austin’s Coffee House (their first night being 24 hours) with opening act DJ Pazzo.

What is your favorite drink when you play at a venue? White Russians and Jack ‘n’ Coke.

Where can we hear and purchase your music? You can find us on MySpace (where you can stream the album) and Facebook. Make sure to add/like us!

Any shout outs you want to give? We would like to thank all our friends that have helped us with our album Space city and live shows:

Jean-Louis Jabouin, Dylan Finch, Paul Rice, Billy Bacci, Annie firmin, Matt Orlando, Bretty McTaggart, Sarah Slegona, Nadine Hornberger, Travis Knares, Zak Sipe, Scott Lyons and Dj Pazzo.

What is your favorite automobile? A flying Delorian

What is your favorite food? Pizza

Give us a random fact about yourself: We have transcended space and time on numerous occasions.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? Teleportation: there are so many galaxies to explore.
